REVOLVE
and after a long pause, i'm back! something besides northern soul this time...
this album is a trip down memory lane for me. crazy to think that it was 10 years ago this came out, because it fits in so well with the current heaps of minimal synth/cold wave recordings crowding the bloggosphere. BEAUTIFUL SKIN was a duo from New York comprised of ex-Rorschach guitarist Nick Forte and Brazilian keyboardist Ross Totino, formerly of the band Computer Cougar. they released only one 7-inch and this LP on the classic california label GSL (Gold Standard Laboratories) before vanishing as fast as they came. while combining elements of the aforementioned minimal and cold wave, theres also moments of kraut, dark ambient and industrial, New Order-like hooks and even classic house, making for a pretty in-depth listening experience. I fucking love this record, and can't believe I'd nearly forgotten about it 'till now. highly recommended download.

SAHARAN CELLPHONES
thanks to SAHEL SOUNDS, an excellent label/blog in the style of sublime frequencies, honest jon's and the like, here's a pretty special mix of exotic sounds from Mauritania. all songs collected as mp3s from various cellphones in the desert-crossing town of Kidal.

NGOZI
killer afro-psych LP from Zambia's Chrissy Zebby Tembo (one hell of a name) & Ngozi Family. lots of extremely fuzzed out guitars here, generally pretty sunshine-y and upbeat tracks save for the heavy stoner blues of "troublemaker", which for me is the highlight of the record. shoestring budget recording quality, youthful naivete, Hendrix worship and afro-fused rhythm here, just like a good record from the early 70's African psych boom should have. enjoy this one.

ANCIENT MINIMAL
more J.D. Emmanuel for those that enjoyed "Wizards" a few posts down. this is his 1986 LP "Trance Formations I: Ancient Minimal Meditations", and it's a heavy one. pure analog/minimal synth cosmic cruising at its best.

SOUL VENDORS ON TOUR
supremely great and rare 1967 rocksteady LP from Jamaica's finest "Soul Vendors". Owen Gray's version of Brenton Wood's soul hit "Gimme Little Sign" on this one is amazing and sublime, as are most of the tracks here. Jamaican Soul classics only! getting you ready for those impending summer vibes on this one.

BACK
well after nearly 3 months of being computer-less and generally pretty bummed, the light has been restored and i'm happy to be typing this on my shiny new macbook pro. things might be slow here for a while until i can figure out if my old hard drive will spew its guts for me. so in the meantime, enjoy this excellent mix of northern soul classics made by my buds that host GHETTO SOUL, Copenhagen's finest soul club.
more to come soon.

OOPS...
sad to report that my hard drive (or rather, both my hard drives) officially said "nope", so now i'm computer-less 'till further notice. updates here will pretty much be slow to nonexistant for the time being as a result. sorry.
to the tens of 'followers' who consistently pilfer music here but never seem to bother to leave a comment or two, thanks for checking back. i hope to return to doing this as soon as i can.

GET A BRAIN
post-Coughs heavy as hammers noise rock from the Windy City. think Am-Rep and you're thinking correctly, serious bombastic sound here with heaps of grime and groove. it's 2011 and everything's gonna be alright.
